About Hill Country Animal League

Our story began more than 35 years ago when four women merged their love for rummage sales with their deep concern for the growing number of unwanted pets. Primarily funded by neighborhood garage and rummage sales, Hill Country Animal League (HCAL) was established January 31, 1986 as a co-op adoption program in partnership with the local Bexar County Humane Society.

After several years of supporting local adoption programs and facilitating the Trap Neuter Release (TNR) program, which provided vouchers for Spay and Neuter surgeries by local veterinarians, the clinic founding partners established the Hill Country Animal League Thrift Store in 2001. Through continued program and thrift store sales success, the HCAL Spay and Neuter Clinic was established in Boerne, TX in 2006.

To this day, the thrift store continues to be the primary funding source for the nonprofit clinic; making it possible to serve the local Boerne and Hill Country communities with more than 100,000 spay & neuter surgeries to date.

Our primary mission at the Hill Country Animal League is to help prevent unwanted, neglected and abused dogs and cats by providing affordable spay/neuter services, preventative care, and guidance on responsible pet ownership. By promoting the fostering and adoption of companion animals, we help deserving pets find loving, forever homes.

As our journey continues, we hope to raise funds to expand our clinic services and promote education about overpopulation, responsible pet ownership, wellness programs for pets, adoption partnerships, and much more! Our ultimate vision is a community free of homeless and neglected cats and dogs.
