An Inside Look: Who is Hill Country Animal League (HCAL)?

At Hill Country Animal League (HCAL), our mission is simple: to provide everyone with access to affordable, safe spay and neuter services. Based in Boerne, Texas, we provide affordable, high-quality spay and neuter services to pet owners across the region, all while working tirelessly to reduce pet overpopulation and improve the quality of life for animals and their families. While we’ve been around for more than 35 years, some local residents may not be aware of our true impact in the community, so we’re offering an inside look at the heart of who we are and how we operate at HCAL.

We Welcome Everyone

Our doors are open to families, rescues, low-income pet owners, and even individuals caring for feral animals. We believe in inclusivity and compassion, which is why 75% of our clients come from rescue organizations, low-income households, or are people managing feral populations. The remaining 25% are community members who want quality care for their pets without the high costs.

By the Numbers

In 2023 alone, we performed 8,489 spay and neuter surgeries and saw 833 animals for preventative wellness check-ups. These numbers reflect the powerful impact we’re making on pet welfare across the hill country, helping to promote responsible pet ownership and reduce pet overpopulation.

Reaching Far and Wide

Though we’re based in Boerne, our reach goes well beyond the city limits. Pet owners travel from surrounding counties—and sometimes as far as Austin and San Marcos—to take advantage of our services. We don’t restrict our care to any specific area because we believe every Texan deserves access to affordable pet care. So, no matter where you’re from, you’re welcome here at HCAL.

Sustainable Funding: The Backbone of Our Mission

As a nonprofit, running our clinic and programs takes a lot of resources. We’ve developed a sustainable model to keep us going, with our main support coming from the Hill Country Animal League Thrift Store in Boerne. The thrift store is more than a place to shop—it’s a vital source of funding that keeps our clinic doors open. Income from our spay and neuter surgeries also helps cover essential costs, ensuring we can continue to serve our community.

We’re committed to transparency and impact. Every donation designated for specific programs, like our “Spay It Forward” initiative, goes directly to that cause—none of it is used for administrative costs. This approach allows our donors to feel confident that their contributions make a direct difference.

How Donors and Volunteers Make a Difference

We couldn’t do this without the incredible support from our community. Recurring monthly donors are a lifeline, providing us with a predictable funding stream that helps us plan ahead and sustain our programs. Volunteers are equally important, especially at the thrift store, where they keep our operations running smoothly. To show our gratitude, we offer volunteers a 50% discount on thrift store purchases—it’s just one small way we can say “thank you” for their time and dedication.

Building Strong Community Connections

At HCAL, we believe in giving back to the community in every way we can. One of our key partnerships is with Roy Maas Youth Alternatives, a nonprofit that helps children in need. Through this collaboration, we invite kids from their programs to shop at our thrift store for essential items. We also contribute to the missions of other nonprofits, showing our commitment to making a positive impact both in and outside of animal welfare.

Facing Challenges and Looking Forward

Like many nonprofits, we face challenges. One of our biggest needs is a larger facility, which would allow us to perform even more surgeries and serve more pets. However, finding funding for this expansion is difficult, as we currently lack large donors who could help us reach this goal.

Another challenge we face is community awareness. Many people don’t realize that every purchase at our thrift store goes directly toward funding our affordable spay and neuter services. By increasing awareness about the connection between the store and the clinic, we hope to encourage more people to shop, donate, and support our mission.

  • Short-Term Goals: Right now, we’re focused on becoming the most recognized thrift store and spay/neuter clinic in Boerne, with a clear connection between the two that our community understands and supports.
  • Long-Term Vision: In the future, we hope to expand our facility so we can offer even more services and make an even greater impact on pet welfare across Texas.

How You Can Help HCAL

If our mission resonates with you, there are plenty of ways to get involved:

  • Donate Monthly: Recurring donations give us the stability to plan and grow our programs without the constant need to fundraise.
  • Volunteer at the Thrift Store: We always need extra hands, and our volunteers get a 50% discount as a small token of our appreciation.
  • Shop and Donate to the Thrift Store: Every purchase directly supports our clinic, so you can feel good knowing you’re helping local pets with every dollar spent.
