August 22nd Is Take Your Cat to the Vet Day!

Cat owners everywhere should mark August 22nd on their calendars. It’s National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day, a day created to raise feline health awareness, learn what you need to know about the intricacies of feline nutrition, and make sure your kitty receives its regularly scheduled wellness procedures or any necessary treatments, either now or in an upcoming vet visit.

Cats need routine veterinary evaluation and care, whether they appear healthy or not. Obesity lurks as a constant threat to sedentary house cats, especially if they’re not getting the ideal diet for their individual needs. Our feline friends are also vulnerable to kidney failure, dental trouble, diabetes, cancer, skin problems, parasites, and respiratory infections. All cats need immunization against rabies, calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, and panleukopenia, while some may also need to be vaccinated against other ailments. Your veterinarian can also put your cat on medications that protect against worms, fleas, ticks, and other invaders.

While you’re thinking about feline wellness this August 22nd, give some thought to other cat wellness essentials such as spaying, neutering, and microchipping. Spay or neuter surgery can protect your cat against a variety of reproductive diseases. Microchipping, the non-surgical insertion of a tiny RF device containing a unique ID number, can help animal workers identify your cat if it goes missing – allowing them to get in touch with you so you can enjoy a happy reunion.

You say you own a dog or other pet instead of a cat? Well, whatever animal you own, make this a special day for your pet by helping it enjoy many more healthy August 22nds. Take the time to think about your pet’s health and wellness, schedule that next vet appointment, and call our team at Hill Country Animal League with any pet health questions you may have!
