Spay and Neuter Vaccines, HCAL

The Importance of Vaccines Before Spay/Neuter Surgery: FAQs for Pet Owners

Spaying or neutering your pet is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure their long-term health and to prevent unwanted litters. At HCAL, we are committed to making this essential service accessible and safe for all pets in our community. One of the key ways we do this is by encouraging vaccination before surgery.

In addition to the following pre-surgical vaccination FAQs, we’ve also created a handy vaccine checklist to help you navigate pre-surgery vaccine requirements.  Download the full guide here: Pre-Surgical Vaccine Checklist

Why are vaccines required before spay/neuter surgery?

Vaccines help protect pets against highly contagious and potentially deadly diseases. When a pet undergoes surgery, their immune system may be temporarily weakened. Vaccinating your pet beforehand helps reduce the risk of infection and ensures they’re protected during this vulnerable period.

What vaccines are typically recommended before surgery?

For most dogs and cats, the core vaccinations recommended prior to surgery include:

Dogs:

  • Rabies (required by law in Texas)
  • DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza)
  • Bordetella (especially for pets in group settings or shelters)

Cats:

  • Rabies
  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)

HCAL’s team will let you know which vaccinations are needed depending on your pet’s age, health, and vaccination history.

How far in advance should my pet be vaccinated?

Ideally, vaccines should be administered at least 2–3 weeks before surgery. This allows your pet’s immune system enough time to develop protection. If your pet is already up to date on vaccinations, you can usually move forward with scheduling surgery without delay.

What if my pet has never been vaccinated?

No problem—HCAL offers affordable vaccine packages that can be administered in advance of surgery. You may need to schedule a wellness appointment before your pet is eligible for their procedure. This also gives our veterinary team a chance to ensure your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia.

Can vaccines be given the same day as surgery?

In some cases, particularly in shelter or rescue scenarios, vaccines may be administered the same day. However, this is not ideal. Pre-surgical vaccines are most effective when given in advance to allow your pet’s body to build immunity. For their safety and comfort, HCAL encourages vaccinations prior to surgery whenever possible.

What if I can’t afford vaccines?

HCAL is proud to offer low-cost wellness services, including vaccinations. If finances are a barrier, ask about our Spay It Forward program, which provides assistance to qualifying low-income pet owners. Our goal is to ensure no pet goes without the care they need.

Do indoor pets need vaccines before surgery?

Yes. Even if your pet stays indoors, they are still at risk. Viruses like parvovirus or panleukopenia can be tracked into the home on shoes or clothing. Rabies, meanwhile, is legally required and protects both pets and humans.

Finally, vaccinating your pet is a simple and powerful way to keep them safe before and after spay/neuter surgery. It’s also a key part of responsible pet ownership and public health.

At HCAL, we’re here to make the process as accessible and stress-free as possible. Have more questions? Give us a call at (830) 249-2341 or schedule an appointment.
